Tutkimusten mukaan telomeereja lyhentävät myös traumaattiset lapsuudenkokemukset tai lapsuuden vaikeat sairaudet. Niihin ei voi itse vaikuttaa...

Kyllä ainakin tuon kuvan mukaan mm. Ranskassa, Espanjassa ja Italiassa (ja Japanissa ja Kanadassa) ihmiset eläisivät pidempään kuin mm. Suomessa ja monissa muissa Euroopan maissa ja USA:ssa?

Kyllä ainakin tuon kuvan mukaan mm. Ranskassa, Espanjassa ja Italiassa (ja Japanissa ja Kanadassa) ihmiset eläisivät pidempään kuin mm. Suomessa ja monissa muissa Euroopan maissa ja USA:ssa?

Ruotsi, Norja ja Islantikin ovat mukana tuossa korkeimmassa luokassa (Australiasta en ole varma, kun ei ole vertailukohtaa vieressä). Muut maat johtavat välimeren maita siis tällä hetkellä 5-3 tai 6-3 Australian tilanteesta riippuen.

Ehkä se välimeren ravinto nostaa muuten alhaista elinajanodotetta, mutta ei se yksistään mikään pitkän iän salaisuus voi olla.

Ei kai kukaan täyspäinen sellaista väitä että jokin yksi asia selittäisi pitkän iän?

About 30 percent of heart attacks, strokes and deaths from heart disease can be prevented in people at high risk if they switch to a Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil, nuts, beans, fish, fruits and vegetables, and even drink wine with meals, a large and rigorous new study has found.

The findings, published on The New England Journal of Medicine’s Web site on Monday, were based on the first major clinical trial to measure the diet’s effect on heart risks. The magnitude of the diet’s benefits startled experts. The study ended early, after almost five years, because the results were so clear it was considered unethical to continue.

The diet helped those following it even though they did not lose weight and most of them were already taking statins, or blood pressure or diabetes drugs to lower their heart disease risk.

“Really impressive,” said Rachel Johnson, a professor of nutrition at the University of Vermont and a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association. “And the really important thing — the coolest thing — is that they used very meaningful endpoints. They did not look at risk factors likecholesterol or hypertension or weight. They looked at heart attacks and strokes and death. At the end of the day, that is what really matters.”

Resveratrol Ameliorates Aging-Related Metabolic Phenotypes by Inhibiting cAMP Phosphodiesterases

Summary

Resveratrol, a polyphenol in red wine, has been reported as a calorie restriction mimetic with potential antiaging and antidiabetogenic properties. It is widely consumed as a nutritional supplement, but its mechanism of action remains a mystery. Here, we report that the metabolic effects of resveratrol result from competitive inhibition of cAMP-degrading phosphodiesterases, leading to elevated cAMP levels. The resulting activation of Epac1, a cAMP effector protein, increases intracellular Ca2+ levels and activates the CamKKβ-AMPK pathway via phospholipase C and the ryanodine receptor Ca2+-release channel. As a consequence, resveratrol increases NAD+ and the activity of Sirt1. Inhibiting PDE4 with rolipram reproduces all of the metabolic benefits of resveratrol, including prevention of diet-induced obesity and an increase in mitochondrial function, physical stamina, and glucose tolerance in mice. Therefore, administration of PDE4 inhibitors may also protect against and ameliorate the symptoms of metabolic diseases associated with aging.

Association between higher plasma lutein, zeaxanthin, and vitamin C concentrations and longertelomere length: results of the Austrian Stroke Prevention Study.

Abstract OBJECTIVES:

To examine the association between plasma concentrations of antioxidative micronutrients and leukocyte telomerelength (LTL) in elderly adults.

DESIGN:

Cross-sectional cohort study.

SETTING:

Austrian Stroke Prevention Study, a population-based cohort study on brain aging.

PARTICIPANTS:

Individuals with a mean age of 66 ± 7 (n = 786; 58% female).

MEASUREMENTS:

Concentrations of vitamin C, lutein, zeaxanthin, β-cryptoxanthin, canthaxanthin, lycopene, α- and γ-tocopherol, α- and β-carotene, and retinol in plasma, advanced oxidation protein products as a measure of oxidative stress in serum, and LTL were measured. Vitamins and carotenoids were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography, advanced oxidation protein products using spectrophotometry, and telomere length using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction.

RESULTS:

Multiple linear regression analyses with adjustment for age and sex demonstrated that higher lutein, zeaxanthin, and vitamin C concentrations were strongly associated with longer telomere length. The associations were independent of body mass index, maximum oxygen uptake, and vascular risk factors and were not mediated by advanced oxidation protein products content.

CONCLUSION:

This study provides first evidence that higher lutein, zeaxanthin, and vitamin C concentrations in plasma are associated with longer LTL in normal elderly persons and suggest a protective role of these vitamins in telomere maintenance.

Age-dependent telomere shortening is slowed down by enrichment of intracellular vitamin C via suppression of oxidative stress.

Abstract

Telomeres in eukaryotic somatic cells are destined to the age-dependent shortening, which has not been demonstrated to correlate to direct lesion of telomeric DNA by reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI); still less explicable is the inhibitory effect of ROI-scavenging on telomere shortening. Here, we succeeded in artificial slowdown of age-dependent telomere shortening to 52-62% of the untreated control, in human vascular endothelial cells, by addition of the oxidation-resistant type of ascorbic acid (Asc), Asc-2-O-phosphate (Asc2P), which concurrently achieved both extension of cellular life-span and prevention of cell size enlargement indicative of cellular senescence. The results are attributable to a 3.9-fold more marked enrichment of intracellular Asc (Asc(in)) by addition of Asc2P, subsequently dephosphorylated before or during transmembrane influx, than by addition of Asc itself, and also attributed to diminution of intracellular ROI to 53% of the control level by Asc2P; telomerase activity was at a trace level and underwent an age-dependent decline, which was significantly decelerated by Asc2P. Thus, age-dependent telomere-shortening can be decelerated by suppression of intracellular oxidative stress and/or by telomerase retention, both of which are achieved by enriched Asc(in) but not by extracellular Asc overwhelmingly more abundant than Asc(in).

Terveemmällä pääsee, kun syö vaan ne rypäleet ja jättää sen alkoholin pois.

Sikäli vähän hurrdurr nämä tutkimukset, kun näissä tuijotetaan aina vaan siihen ikään. Onko sillä nyt jotain oleellista eroa elääkö sairaana 20,50 vai 100v? Kärsimyshän vaan pitkittyy. Kaipaisimme enemmän tutkimuksia, joissa tutkitaan elämäntapojen ja ruokavalion yhteyttä hyvään elämänlaatuun sen kestosta riippumatta.

Kuninkaalliset, menestyneet taidemaalarit ja kuvanveistäjät elävät pitkään.

Syynä on ilmeisesti vähäinen työ, runsas ja viihdyttävä vapaa-aika, sekä alati käytössä oleva palvelusväki ja hyvä ansiotaso.

Pienessä viinissä taitavat olla kuitenkin koko ajan, mutta ruoka on parhaista mahdollisista puhtaista raaka-aineista - ei mitään einesmakaronilaatikkoa tai saunalenkkiä.

^^Taidemaalareilla ja kuvanveistäjillä kyllä harvemmin on leveä leipä. Monet kitkuttavat nälkärajoilla ja jopa tekevät taidetta vapaa-ajallaan ja hankkivat leipätyönänsä milloin mistäkin, esimerkiksi opettamisesta.

Effect of Garlic on Blood Pressure: A Meta-Analysis.

Abstract

Garlic supplements are thought to reduce blood pressure (BP). The authors performed a meta-analysis to investigate garlic's effect on BP. Ovid Medline, Cochrane Library, and PubMed (1946 to November 2013) were used to search for randomized controlled trials. Seventeen trials were included. Pooled analysis showed that garlic intake caused a 3.75-mm Hg reduction (95% confidence interval [CI], -5.04 to -2.45, I2 =30.7%; P<.001) in systolic BP and a 3.39-mm Hg reduction (95% CI, -4.14 to -2.65, I2 =67%; P<.001) in diastolic BP compared with controls. Meta-analysis of subgroups showed a significant reduction in systolic BP in hypertensive (-4.4 mm Hg; 95% CI, -7.37 to -1.42, I2 =0.0%; P=.004) but not normotensive patients. No significant reduction in diastolic BP was seen. After sensitivity analysis, heterogeneity disappeared and significant diastolic BP reduction (-2.68 mm Hg, 95% CI, -4.93 to -0.42, I2 =0.0%; P=.020) was shown in hypertensive patients. This meta-analysis suggests that garlic supplements are superior to controls (placebo in most trails) in reducing BP, especially in hypertensive patients.
